Every Saturday, approximately 400 children gather at Bodoi Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK). The sounds of children singing and dancing while praising God can be heard while walking into the church. After a children’s sermon taught by amazing volunteers within the village, the children form a line to receive a nutritious meal.
What happens behind the scenes on Saturdays is the real miracle. Volunteers from the village step up and donate their time to ensure the feeding program happens every week. Our on-site director organizes the feeding program with volunteers to prepare food, teach children sermons, coordinate the clean up committee, and organize team activities. Hours before the children gather at the church on Saturdays, mothers from the village start preparing beans, greens and rice for the Saturday meal. When the children arrive to the church, they are greeted with smiling adults who want the best for them. After a bible lesson and singing songs, the children are dismissed and line up to eat lunch. After lunch, the children break up into their “houses” (named after animals like lions and elephants) for sports and activities.
Parents of children who are benefitting from scholarships are expected to contribute once a month to the effort, whether by cooking the meal, serving, or carrying food supplies to the church. One day our dream is to have a full kitchen facility!
Since 2012, Friends of Angaza Nuru (formerly via Priest Lake Presbyterian Church) has funded the Saturday feeding program. That is more than 130,000 meals provided to the children by Angaza Nuru. And every Christmas, a generous donor funds a large holiday meal for the feeding program participants, and the parents of the Angaza Nuru children are all invited. In 2023, over 300 people from the village were in attendance.
We welcome monthly or one-time donations towards the Feeding Program!
